Football FAQ

How many positions are there on the field? There are up to 5 positions.  The referee, umpire, head linesman, side judge, back judge.  High school games have 5 man crews.  Youth football and freshman football have 4 man crews. (No back judge)

How are games assigned to me?  The SJVOA uses the "Arbiter".  It is an online system used to schedule your games based on your available calendar.  If you are available you will be emailed/text notifying you that a new game has been assigned to you.  You will then have to login to the Arbiter to accept the game.  Declining the game is frowned upon unless you speak with the assigner ahead of time.

What happens before a game?  At all levels there is a pregame where you meet as a crew before the game.  In High School football you meet in the locker room to discuss the upcoming game.  In youth football you meet in the parking lot and discuss the upcoming game.  At all levels you will then walk onto the field and have assignments to do prior to kickoff.

How do I get paid? Most games are paid for using the arbiter.  You have to setup your own account on the arbiter, including a direct deposit account.  Some schools pay by check instead of using the arbiter.

How do I get on a High School 5-Man crew?  As a rookie you will be assigned Youth football games but you will have members from a High School crew working with you in those games.  If you perform well you will be noticed by other members.  The White hat (referee) chooses his crew for the season based off of what he has seen and what others have told him.  During any season there are reasons why a crew member can't work, so you could have an opportunity to move up mid-season of your first year and get some great experience.
